Bill & Utilities Splitter — Split Bills by Days Present or Equally
List the bills, add the people, and choose a fair way to split. Perfect for move-ins, move-outs, and long trips away.
How the bill splitter works
Add each bill (electricity, internet, water, gas) and everyone who shares them. Then pick one of two methods:
- By days present. Each person pays in proportion to the days they were home during the billing period. Someone there for 12 of 30 days pays less than someone there for all 30.
- Equal by people. Everyone pays the same amount, no matter how long they were there.
Days are counted as "person-days": the more days you were home, the bigger your share of the total. Use it for the whole household, even if people arrive and leave on different dates.
Worked example
Electricity $96.40 + internet $60.00 + water $48.75 = $205.15. Alex and Sam were there all 30 days; Jordan moved in for the last 12.
| Person | Days | By days | Equal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | 30 | $85.48 | $68.39 |
| Sam | 30 | $85.48 | $68.38 |
| Jordan | 12 | $34.19 | $68.38 |
| Total | $205.15 | $205.15 |
By days, the total is split over 72 person-days (30 + 30 + 12), so each person-day costs about $2.85. These numbers come from the same calculator code that runs above.
Frequently asked questions
Should utility bills be split by days or equally?
If everyone lives there the whole period, an equal split is simple and usually fine. If someone moves in or out mid-month, or is away for a long stretch, splitting by days present is fairer because it charges people for the time they were actually there.
What about bills that do not change with how many people are home, like internet?
Fixed bills such as internet are often split equally among everyone who lives there, while usage bills like electricity and water suit a days-based split. If you want both, run the tool twice, once for each type of bill, and add the two amounts.
How are the days counted?
Enter the number of days in the billing period (for example 30) and how many of those days each person was home. Shares are proportional to the days. Leave a person's days blank to count them for the whole period.
Will the shares add up to the exact bill total?
Yes. The tool works in whole cents and distributes any leftover cents using the largest-remainder method, so the total always matches the bills exactly.
Can I share the result with my roommates?
Yes. Use the share button to copy a link that contains your numbers, or download the result card image. The numbers live only in the link, not on any server.
Is this advice?
No. It is a calculator. Check your lease and any agreements with your landlord or roommates about how bills are meant to be divided.
